January 15, 2007The DirecTV bluesI recently moved and while I was having my services switched over I was told I could sign up for DirecTV and get Tivo service for $6 a month. My in-laws have Tivo and I LOVE it. It gives the user a rich user experience, the menus are nice and intuitive, and they never seem to have any problems. Since Tivo has priced themselves out of the market independently I knew they had ties to DirecTV. It turns out DirecTV (basking in their own arrogance and stupidity) cut their ties with Tivo and thought they could make their own DVR. Later they find out their programmers are not smart enough and their designers not imaginative enough to make their own DVR. What did they do? They release the R15, DirecTV’s new and improved “Tivo”. Apparently DirecTV’s new approach to business is, if you can’t do it right sell a half-working, ill designed product. I was a little upset that they pulled the bait and switch on me and when I called them to confront them they tried to tell me that “Tivo” is a verb meaning DVR and not a company or another product. No matter how I tried to convince them that “Tivo” was infact an actual product they would talk down to me as if I wasn’t “in the know” like them. To top it all off I read a few days later Comcast (who I just canceled to get DirecTV) recently struck a deal with Tivo. Not only am I under contract with DirecTV for TWO years using a clearly inferior product, but I have to set idle while my old cable provider uses the tool that made me want to switch in the first place. It is a cruel cruel world! Comments
That blows. I have dish network with their dual tuner DVR and LOVE it. When your contract is up you may consider it. "Tivo is a verb" LMAO, don't you love it when you know more that the "experts"? Posted by: Spencer at January 16, 2007 12:25 PMThanks, I wonder if Dish Network has local channels? Posted by: Jason at January 17, 2007 10:05 AMCall the f'in' Lawyers. Scream to high hell ! Yes they do have locals. Posted by: Spencer at January 30, 2007 07:12 PMPlease let me know how you got out of your contract. I work for a HSP that supplies DirecTV in certain areas, when I was hired they said I would get it free, No not if your under contract after they release your contract then you get it free. Even if you work for them your treated no better, not to speak on the fact customer service reps live over sees and just listen to enough tapes to know how to bs in english. I recently signed up for Dish and I need to get out of my contract with these side show cable providers.............oh and needless to say I am working for them and searching for a job daily. I can't work for a company this deceitful to their customers and employees Posted by: DIRECTV HATER at February 19, 2007 04:51 PMHi Jason, I'm John and i run a team called PADDY'S IN SPACE on the seti@home project. Jason, i love the skin you made for phpBB called "what is real". Jason i want to use this skin but there is a problem with it that is holding me back from using it. When you view a message, the section with the avatar is very "Stretched" and it makes the viewing window Hugh. Jason is there any chance you would e-mail me and let me know if this can be changed. Jason, the skin is incredible. I want to use that skin. Can you help me out! Thanks, This is not news really (even back in Jan when you wrote it), the TiVo/Dtv ties were cut long ago (many years ago really), and I never thought I would say it, but I am actually glad now. There have been many improvements with the HR20’s (Dtv’s HD DVR), it may not have all the great TiVo features but its has many more that are better. I do still miss a couple TiVo features, but not enough to switch back anytime soon. Also, it’s not the programmers fault they cannot make a TiVo like DVR, it’s because of patents and licensing fees, the same reason most products are ALMOST good, yet suck because they lack things; gotta love corporate America, always in it for the consumer… Post a comment
