October 12, 2004The Worst Vacation Continues...Not only did I spending just about every waking minute doing homework or in class yesterday, but I dropped my wedding ring in the couch. In order to get it out I will have to un-staple some material under the couch. It doesn’t sound like a big deal to me, but Chastity thinks that will ruin the couch. Oh well, one less thing I have to worry about I guess. Today I ran most of my errands instead of doing it Friday like I planned in my last post. I did this because Chastity and I might end up going to Gatlinburg for a few days after all. Although I am not exactly pumped about going to Gatlinburg (again), but it will be nice to get away from Chattanowhere for a while. This means I will not get finished with my homework, but at this point I am so stressed out I don’t care.
One of my errands was to take my truck to get my Catalytic Converter (which has been cracked for some time now) replaced. I was hoping that would make my check engine light go off and clear up that stupid crackling sound. Midas said they would fix it for $565.00, then the helpful mechanic explained by way of a really bad sketch on the ticket why it would cost so much.. That sounded a LITTLE high so I went to check MAXi. Good thing I did because they replaced it for only $149.00. More than a $400 difference. That will be the last time I ever go to Midas. Unfortunately the crackling sound didn’t go away and the check engine light is still on. I will have to pay yet again to have my truck serviced to find out what else is wrong with it. On top of that I found out I will have to have my brake pads replaced soon as well. Posted by GraphicMD at October 12, 2004 06:21 PM | TrackBackComments
sometimes catalytic converters have a sulfuric smell when they begin to go bad. also, the element inside of a catalytic converter may jar loose from its set point and rattle. i'd be disappointed w/ maxi as well. their service didn't solve the problem. a high %age of check engine lights are tripped by an O2 (oxygen) sensor. i'm not sure about that crackling noise? could be a number of things. Posted by: metalaaron at October 13, 2004 02:13 AMJason don't pay a dime to get that check engine light checked out! Go to AutoZone and ask the guy at the desk to run diagnostics on your truck. They do it for free. He will be able to tell you what it is. That light will never turn off by itself. You have to have it reset. If everything checks out okay with the diagnostic tool (now that the converter has been replaced) he will turn the check engine light of for you. Posted by: gid at October 13, 2004 09:41 AMI don't know if MAXi did anything wrong or not. AudoZone will do that for free?? I will have to check that out when I get back in town. Thanks guys Posted by: Jason at October 13, 2004 10:40 AMYea, I one time payed PepBoys to run a check. When I told my dad he informed me that I wasted my money. I was ticked. Then about 6 months later my check engine light came back on, so i went to autozone and they told me what was wrong, i fixed it and they turned the light off for me. Posted by: gid at October 13, 2004 11:44 AMi skimmed through the 1st time and missed the cracked converter part of your post. that's the 2nd time i've needed to use . 1st was no auto parse, but some tags were mysteriously added. ;) must_watch_carefully_@_2_A_M some places will waive the SES light check if you get the problem fixed at their place. hope you get it fixed (cheap). :) Posted by: metalaaron at October 13, 2004 12:30 PMPost a comment
