September 27, 2004Extreme Makeover: Home Edition
A brand new season of my favorite show came on last night. Extreme Makeover: Home Edition hosted by Ty Pennington. This is where they find a family, send them on vacation for a week, and totally recreate their house. One of the reasons I love this show is because of the families they choose. Most seem like very deserving families and seem to be Christians as well. I would be very surprised to find that the producers of the show were not Christians. I use to wonder what it would be like to be able to do things like that for people who really need it, now I can actually watch it being done. I actually heard one of the kids on the show today say "This is sick" referring to their new room that he seemed to really like. Of course this is confusing for me (as is should be for any English speaking person). He seemed to be a pretty normal kid, so I don’t think he was just confused as to what "sick" really means. Perhaps the word "sick" is the new "bad". Posted by GraphicMD at September 27, 2004 12:26 AM | TrackBackComments
I can't stand it when people use the word sick in that context. I also don't like it it when people say things like, "That's wicked cool." Wicked? Sick? Bad? Are these words that we really think are OK to swap for positive words? Generally, the answer is yes. Culturally, we do think it's OK. People call evil good all of the time. Why do we tend to give a place of honor to words that should be used to describe evil things? The answer's a pretty simple one: Contempt. All of this sort of careless talk is born of contempt... Sad, really. Posted by: hugo at September 27, 2004 01:40 PMThat is true. It just blurs the line between what is good and what is bad more than it already is. These days we already have a hard time discerning what is right and wrong. We don't need to add to the confusion. Posted by: Jason at September 28, 2004 01:42 PMPost a comment
